Comic Art Types

There is no shortage of different types of comic art. Let’s take a look at some of the most common comic art types:

  • Comic strips – Comic strips are a form of sequential art, just like comic books. However, comic strips are now a separate medium. Aside from the written word, comic strips stay in the same format from day to day since the comic strip artist draws each strip from start to finish. Also, they are usually drawn in black and white.
  • Editorial and gag cartoons – Editorial cartoons are the simple kind you read in the newspaper: they are drawn to a specific story, but the artist is trying to make a point on a particular subject. We see editorial cartoons in the newspaper every day, but they are not always the same—sometimes they are political, sometimes they are funny, sometimes they are just stupid. Most of them still use the same old joke or truism as their hook.
  • Comic books – Comic books are a form of sequential art, which means you start at the beginning and work your way through the story. Comic books are graphic novels (graphic novel, graphic novel, graphic novel…), but for the purposes of this discussion, we’ll just call them comic books.

Until recently, comics have been a medium that is often associated with humor. After all, the humorous version of most comics is one of the most popular genres in the comic industry. Although people have been drawing comics since the 1600s, the medium was not recognized as an art form until the 1930s, when comic books were first published.

Comic Art Examples

Comic art is a fascinating art form that combines the visual storytelling of film or painting with the immediacy of sequential art. Art has a long history, and the craft of cartooning has produced some of the most beloved and influential images in history. From the rowdy antics of Bugs Bunny to the bizarre but colorful characters created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, the comic book has long been a source of entertainment and inspiration.

While the superhero comics of the 1940s were mainly known for their artistic beauty, the success of Marvel Comics in the 1960s resulted in a shift in emphasis to the importance of the stories. Marvel artist John Romita Sr. even went so far as to say that readers of comics no longer cared about the artwork but only about the stories.
